Honeywell has announced that clinical sun care brand myDerm is utilising its Solstice® Propellant (HFO-1234ze) in its latest broad-spectrum sunscreen, Mineral SPF 50 Clinical Sunscreen Continuous Spray.
Solstice Propellant is a ready-now, non-ozone depleting hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) solution that has an ultra-low-global-warming-potential of less than one, said Honeywell, adding that it helps reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 99% compared with alternatives commonly used in aerosol products.
With globally-adopted phase-down regulations to reduce carbon emissions eliminating traditional propellants such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) or hydrocarbons, Honeywell's Solstice Propellant offers environmental, regulatory and performance benefits, and supports myDerm’s focus on sustainable ingredients, said Honeywell.
"At myDerm, it is all about the ingredients we use to create our clinical strength sun and skin care products that our customers can trust,” said Diana Alderson, vice president of marketing, myDerm.
"Our newest sunscreen is not only dermatologist-recommended, but also Hawaii-approved with the highest formulation standards. This new formula is free of isobutane, oxybenzone, octinoxate and parabens, and the incorporation of Honeywell’s Solstice Propellant also enables us to help protect people without sacrificing performance or impact on the environment.”
"Brands like myDerm that place importance on sustainability are turning to Honeywell Solstice Propellant for its superior performance and reduced environmental impact,” said Joanna Minion, general manager, Aerosols, Honeywell Advanced Materials.
"With something as important as a sunscreen, ease and precision of application are just as important as potential impact on the environment. Ultra-low-GWP Solstice Propellant both ensures high-quality performance and is better for the environment. It continues to be a top choice for innovative skin and hair care brands with aerosols.”
Solstice Propellant is also volatile organic compound (VOC)-exempt — per the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) — meaning it has negligible contribution to ground-level smog formation.
This allows formulators to reduce the use of VOC ingredients like hydrocarbon propellants, particularly in continuous spray sunscreen applications.
