WD-40 launches first EU Ecolabel-certified bio lubricant in multi-use category
The aerosol spray is formulated with 85% bio-based ingredients and is aimed at workshop, facilities management, garden and light industrial applications, alongside home and bike maintenance. It combines the three core functions long associated with the brand's classic formula: penetrating, lubricating and protecting metal, plastic and rubber components.
The EU Ecolabel is a voluntary certification administered by the European Commission and independent bodies, requiring products to demonstrate reduced environmental impact across their full lifecycle, from raw material sourcing and manufacture through to use and disposal. For lubricants, certification falls under Decision (EU) 2018/1702. The new product carries an operating temperature range up to 100°C and NSF H2 registration, indicating suitability for incidental food-contact environments.
Steve Brass, president and chief executive officer of WD-40 Company, said the launch builds on more than 70 years of the brand's history, adding that it shows the company's products can meet strict sustainability standards without compromising on performance.
The bio lubricant is rolling out gradually across European markets following its unveiling in late May 2026, and adds to a wider push across the aerosol lubricants category toward lower-impact formulations, alongside ongoing shifts in propellant chemistry driven by tightening VOC and global warming potential regulation.
