Envases Europe partners with Tata Steel Nederland to offer lower-carbon packaging steel

Envases Europe and Tata Steel Nederland have announced a collaboration to make Carbon Lite steel available to Envases' packaging customers, giving fillers and brands a route to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the steel in their products.

The offering uses a mass-balance accounting framework under which CO2 equivalent reductions from decarbonisation projects at Tata Steel Nederland's IJmuiden works are allocated to specific steel quantities and independently verified by certification body DNV. Envases passes the verified emission reduction declarations directly to customers to support their Scope 3 reporting under the GHG Protocol.

Rikke Helstrup, head of sustainability at Envases Europe, said: "Carbon Lite steel provides our clients with the third-party assured data they need for their corporate carbon accounting and Scope 3 reporting, ensuring full transparency to avoid double counting without compromising on packaging quality."

Tata Steel Nederland is progressing its Green Steel Project at IJmuiden, which involves shifting to lower-emission steelmaking technologies, increasing scrap use and targeting net-zero steel production by 2045. The company offers sustainability solutions based on mass balance, book-and-claim and embodied emissions approaches across its product range.

Dennis de Koe, director of sales packaging at Tata Steel Nederland, said: "This partnership demonstrates how collaboration across the value chain can accelerate investment in further CO2 equivalent reduction projects at Tata Steel Nederland."

Steel packaging has an average recycling rate of 84% in Europe.
