German machinery manufacturer Hinterkopf GmbH has completed an asset acquisition of Velox Pure Digital Ltd to strengthen its Direct-to-Shape digital printing capabilities for cylindrical container decoration.
The strategic move positions the company to address divergent market demands within aerosol and beverage can production through a three-tier machine portfolio.
The asset deal, concluded through insolvency administration, transfers patents, manufactured machines and component technology to Hinterkopf. The acquisition responds to a fundamental shift in how aerosol and cylinder-based packaging must balance production flexibility, image quality and throughput.
"Different markets require different solutions," said Alexander Hinterkopf, owner and CEO. "We are not building one digital printing platform for every application, but specifying the right technology for each market's requirements."
The DX Series, nominated for the PMMI Technology Excellence Award, prioritises product flexibility and economical small-batch production.
Aerosol fillers can respond to short runs and rapid product changeovers whilst achieving return on investment at lower machine utilisation rates — a critical capability as customised and seasonal products proliferate.
The established D Series, operational for 15 years across more than 60 installations globally, emphasises print resolution and photorealistic image quality. Over 350 production days annually in demanding 24/7 environments, the D Series targets premium decoration applications where visual differentiation drives retail shelf impact.
The new V Series adds speed capacity. Engineered for high-volume cylinder decoration, it delivers the throughput required for mass-production aerosol and can applications whilst maintaining cost competitiveness with established lithographic and conventional printing processes.
Digital printing's strategic relevance to aerosol producers extends beyond process efficiency. Direct-to-Shape capability enables rapid response to consumer expectations, shorter product life cycles and SKU proliferation — particularly valuable in seasonal fragrance, personal care and household categories where packaging differentiation influences purchase intent.
"Packaging decoration has a direct influence on purchasing decision at point of sale," Hinterkopf noted. "For aerosol and cylindrical container producers, this flexibility is increasingly non-negotiable."
The acquisition also represents generational transition within the Hinterkopf management structure. For the first time, a strategic decision of this scale was taken jointly by the company's four-member management team, including the third generation — Christina and Christoph Hinterkopf — alongside founders Anke and Alexander.
