Gillette production plant breaks ground in Andover

The 200,000 square-foot plant will be the first P&G grooming site to integrate blade, razor, aerosol and chemistry manufacturing, creating a multidisciplinary manufacturing hub.
The groundbreaking came a year and a half after the company announced it would move its manufacturing plant from South Boston to Andover.
Since then, the project has gone before town boards and commissions for a special permit.
In November, the Planning Board approved a special permit for the project.
Public hearings revealed environmental concerns surrounding the impact of 'forever chemicals' being emitted as a result of razor blade production.
Gillette said the company follows state regulations and was willing to add extra filtration devices in the plant.
Select Board Vice Chair Alex Vispoli said all of the concerns showed the public, and the boards and commissions who issued the special permit, cared about the project and community.
Vispoli added it was a thorough process and the end product will drive economic growth in Andover.
P&G Global Grooming Business CEO Gary Coombe addressed hundreds of attendees at the ceremonial groundbreaking, saying the plant will be a “21st century manufacturing facility.”
The hub will serve as a primary manufacturing hub in the US for Gillette. It will not only support blade and razor production, but also packaging operations, shave preparation production and direct-to-consumer fulfillment along with other P&G manufacturing.
The plant will also have state-of-the art medical and recreational spaces for employees. The move from South Boston to Andover is expected to bring several hundred more jobs to the site once completed, according to Andover’s town website.
