HCPA pays tribute to aerosol expert Montfort Johnsen

Aerosol industry expert Montfort Johnsen, known as Monty to friends and colleagues, has passed away.

The Household and Commercial Products Association (HCPA) said it was saddened to learn of Johnsen’s passing. During his extensive career, Johnsen invented five aerosol-related patents, authored 10 aerosol books, including The Aerosol Handbook (Editions 1 and 2), which is known as The Bible of the aerosol industry, and served on the HCPA’s board of directors for 11 years.

“Monty was a dedicated member of the HCPA since 1953,” said Steve Caldeira, president and CEO of the HCPA. “He was elected chair of the aerosol products division in 1974 and served as chair of the board of directors in 1981.

“Monty’s contributions to HCPA and the aerosol industry were unmatched. I know he was very proud of attending all 127 meetings that HCPA hosted during his time as a member. He and his wife, Marie, were fixtures at these events, and they looked forward to interacting with colleagues and discussing industry issues.”

Johnsen joined the aerosol industry with Continental Filling Corporation in 1953. From there, he became a founding member of Peterson Filling & Packaging Co, now known as KIK Custom Products. He also travelled the world as an aerosol technology expert and was regarded as an expert witness to provide insight and information in legal matters regarding aerosol technology.

“HCPA’s Aerosol Products Division benefitted significantly from Monty’s knowledge and we were proud to present him with the Charles E Allderdice Award - HCPA’s most prestigious honour – in 2003 for his many achievements in the aerosol industry,” said Caldeira.

“Monty gave more than 60 years of service to the aerosol products industry and his legacy will live on through the innovations and advancements we continue to make every day in his honour.”
