P&G recalls aerosol dry shampoo, conditioner products
Procter & Gamble (P&G) has issued a voluntary product recall of multiple aerosol dry conditioner and dry shampoo spray products, due to the presence of benzene.
The recall includes products from Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, and Waterl<ss produced in the US, in addition to previously discontinued aerosol dry shampoo products from Old Spice and Hair Food.
The announcement follows P&G’s recall of Old Spice and Secret aerosol spray antiperspirant products in November.
Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, or through the skin, and can result in cancer. Based on risk assessments published by the US Environmental Protection Agency, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in P&G’s testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.
P&G noted that to date, it has not received any reports of adverse events related to this product recall and is conducting the recall “out of an abundance of caution”.
Following recent reports that indicated traces of benzene in some aerosol spray products, P&G started a review of its entire portfolio. While benzene is not an active ingredient in any of its products, the company’s review showed that “unexpected levels” of benzene came from the propellant.
Products affected from the Waterl<ss range include: Waterl<ss Dry Conditioner Weightless Smooth 3.6 oz; Waterl<ss Dry Conditioner Instant Moisture 3.6 oz; Waterl<ss Conditioner Weightless Smooth 0.98 oz; Waterl<ss Dry Conditioner Instant Moisture 0.98 oz; Waterl<ss Dry Shampoo No Residue 3.7 oz and 1 oz.
The following Pantene products are affected: Pantene Sultry Bronde All in One Luxury Mist 4.9 oz; Pantene Smooth Talker Dry Conditioning Oil 3.9 oz; Pantene Mist Behaving Dry Conditioning Mist 3.9 oz; Pantene Mist Behaving Dry Conditioning Mist 3.9 oz and 1.0 oz; Pantene Gold Series Instant Nourishing Spray 4.9 oz; Pantene Dry Shampoo No Water Refresh 4.9 oz, Pantene Dry Shampoo Sheer Volume 4.9 oz, Pantene Never Tell Dry Shampoo 4.2 oz.
Affected Aussie products include: Aussie Smooth Vibes Dry Conditioner 4.9oz; Aussie Petal Soft Dry Conditioner 4.9 oz; Aussie Sleekend Warrior Dry Conditioner 4.9 oz; Aussie After Hours Dry Shampoo Texture Spray 4.9 oz; Aussie Tousle Hustle Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz; Aussie Clean Color Protect Shampoo 4.9 oz; Aussie Clean Texture Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz; Aussie Clean Volume Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz;
The following Herbal Essences products have been recalled: Herbal Essences Blue Ginger Refresh Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz; Herbal Essences White Grapefruit & Mint Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz; Herbal Essences White Strawberry & Sweet Mint Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz; Herbal Essences Cucumber & Green Tea Dry Shampoo 4.9 oz; Herbal Essences Cucumber & Green Tea Dry Shampoo 1.7 oz.
Additionally, the Hair Food Coconut Dry Shampoo (4.9 oz), Old Spice Fiji Dry Shampoo (4.9 oz) and Old Spice Pure Sport Dry Shampoo (4.9 oz), have been recalled.
No other products from Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, Hair Food and Waterl<ss are in the scope of this product recall and such other products can “continue to be used as intended”, said P&G.
