US cleaning products industry worth $88.5bn, ACI study finds

The US cleaning products industry directly generates $88.5 billion in economic output and employs nearly 65,000 workers nationwide, according to a new economic impact study from the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), conducted by Euromonitor International.

Including its wider supply chain, the industry's total economic activity reaches $103 billion and supports 125,000 US jobs.

Aerosol-format products sit within two of the three consumer categories the report breaks out. Surface Care, which includes multi-purpose cleaners, disinfectants, bathroom and glass cleaners, generated $8.2 billion in US retail value sales in 2025.

Soaps and Sanitisers reached $11.3 billion, covering hand hygiene and personal cleansing products. Fabric Care remains the largest category overall at $18.5 billion, though this segment is dominated by non-aerosol formats such as detergents and fabric softeners.

ACI President & CEO Jennifer Abril presented the findings at the Cleaning Products U.S. conference in Alexandria, Virginia. "Cleaning is essential to modern life. It helps keep families healthy, hospitals and schools operating, and businesses moving across the US economy," she said. "This report demonstrates the breadth and depth of our sector's economic impact: not only do our innovative products keep businesses open every day, but our supply chain drives economic growth and expansion in every state and every congressional district."

The report also identifies several trends shaping the sector, including continued innovation in chemistry, manufacturing technology and product design aimed at improving performance alongside sustainability and resource efficiency; sustained demand driven by population growth, healthcare expansion and commercial activity; increased investment in supply chain resilience; and manufacturers adapting to evolving regulatory and trade conditions.

The analysis uses the industry-standard IMPLAN input-output model alongside data from Euromonitor's Passport Database. The full report, along with an interactive dashboard allowing users to explore national, state and congressional district data, is available on ACI's website.
