Trivium Packaging has had its net-zero target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming that the company’s greenhouse gas reduction goals are aligned with a 1.5°C pathway and the global aim of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
Michael Mapes, Chief Executive Officer of Trivium Packaging, said the approval “gives our teams and partners confidence in our commitment to decarbonisation.”
He added that the company will continue to focus on sustainable sourcing, increasing renewable electricity use, prioritising ecodesign, reducing energy consumption, and improving efficiency, while reporting progress transparently each year.
The company has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. It aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and Scope 3 emissions by 90%, both measured from a 2020 baseline.
Since 2020, Trivium has already cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 31% and Scope 3 emissions by 19%. The company has also retained EcoVadis Platinum and CDP A List recognition, strengthening the foundation for its SBTi-approved pathway.
Trivium plans to achieve its net-zero target through a combination of sustainable sourcing, increasing renewable electricity, ecodesign, energy efficiency, and reduced energy consumption.
The company will report on progress annually and maintain third-party assurance through its sustainability report.
The Science Based Targets initiative is a corporate climate action organisation that provides standards and guidance for companies to set greenhouse gas reduction targets in line with climate science.
Its partners include CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, WWF, and the We Mean Business Coalition.
