SABRE launches EPA-approved dual-species aerosol deterrent

SABRE has announced the official California registration of its FRONTIERSMAN MAX Bear & Mountain Lion Spray, now certified as the only aerosol deterrent approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use against both bears and mountain lions.
This dual-species deterrent arrives at a time of significantly increased wildlife encounters across North America.
The product features a formulation with 2.0% Major Capsaicinoids, the maximum strength legally permitted, and is supported by SABRE’s in-house high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) testing facilities.
The inclusion of the climate-responsible propellant HFO-1234ze marks a deliberate move away from traditional hydrofluorocarbon (HFC-134a) propellants, aligning the product with growing environmental expectations in the aerosol sector.
This shift is intended to minimise environmental impact without compromising on delivery performance or user safety.
Manufactured in the United States, the aerosol canister delivers a 40-foot (12-metre) spray range, exceeding the reach of comparable deterrents by over 6 metres.
This extended distance provides users with an increased margin of safety during high-stress wildlife encounters.
The spray format allows for rapid and controlled deployment in outdoor environments, making it suitable for backcountry use as well as for residents in proximity to wildland areas.
Recent approvals by the State of California have underscored the need for products capable of addressing multi-species threats, particularly in regions where human activity intersects with expanding wildlife habitats.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates that more than 60,000 black bears now inhabit the state, alongside growing reports of mountain lion sightings.
Notable recent incidents include a mountain lion attack on a camp worker in Trinity County and a series of sightings in urban-adjacent areas such as Monterey County and Santa Clarita.
Elsewhere in the United States, there have been fatal and non-fatal encounters involving bears in Florida, Connecticut, Utah, and Montana.
The FRONTIERSMAN MAX’s dual efficacy and EPA-backed registration respond directly to these evolving safety challenges, offering a field-tested solution for consumers and professionals alike, according to the company.
David Nance, Chief Executive Officer of SABRE, emphasised the company’s dual commitment to safety and sustainability. “FRONTIERSMAN MAX Bear and Mountain Lion Spray represents the highest standard in personal protection while supporting sustainable outdoor practices,” he said. “With increasing wildlife activity across the country, we want everyone - from hikers to homeowners - to feel confident and prepared.”
