Pioneers in aerosol recycling
Recyle Aerosol is based in Tennessee in the US, and has been recycling aerosols for about 35 years. When the organisation was formed, aerosol recycling was not a huge endeavour, according to Okey. It was just ‘one of those additional things’ that could be seen within the waste industry as almost a nuisance amongst the suite of waste streams that needed to be managed.
“It tended to fall into the hazardous waste category, so you had commercial hazardous waste managers taking up that service, along with the other 50 things they do,” Okey told World Aerosols. “So it didn’t get a lot of focus.”
“Fortunately, an entrepreneurial gentleman named Gerry Rains, the founder of our company, grabbed a hold of it, saw the need and developed his own system to properly recycle and capture components of the aerosol package.”
Rains approached the endeavour from a process standpoint and as an equipment developer, rather than from a waste management perspective.
