German aluminium tube and aerosol can sector faces dip in demand

Members of its Tubes, Cans and Impact Extruded Parts Association reported shipping 393 million aluminium tubes in the first six months of the year, down about 1% compared with the same period in 2024.
Aerosol can deliveries dropped more sharply, down 3.2% to 268 million units.
While demand from the deodorant and haircare markets rose slightly, the overall decline was driven by weaker sales in other cosmetics categories and in smaller sectors including food, pharmaceuticals and household products.
Recruitment challenges have eased somewhat, with layoffs in the automotive sector releasing more skilled workers into the labour pool.
However, rising energy, logistics, compliance and raw material costs continue to weigh heavily on competitiveness.
The industry is also monitoring the impact of newly introduced 50% tariffs on empty aluminium cans and tubes in the United States.
The association said most German producers focus on supplying the domestic and wider EU markets, though a handful of exporters could feel the effects.
Johannes Schick, Chairman of the Association, said: “Against the backdrop of global trade barriers, geopolitical tensions, and a weak European and German economy, the current business environment remains highly challenging.
"Nevertheless, our members are demonstrating resilience, adapting to regulatory changes, and continuing to ensure the reliable supply of aluminium tubes and aerosol cans to customers worldwide.”
Despite the headwinds, member firms report stable capacity utilisation and are prioritising innovation in sustainable packaging and international business growth.
