French aerosol production falls 4% in 2025 despite home care surge

news item image
French aerosol production declined by 4% in 2025, with output dropping from 723 million units in 2024 to 694 million units, driven by a sharp fall in the technical and industrial segment.

The decline did not affect all categories equally. Personal care volumes edged up slightly compared with 2024, while home care recorded the strongest performance of any segment, rising 16%.

The 'other' segment, which encompasses technical, industrial, paint, varnish and pharmaceutical products, fell sharply, offsetting gains elsewhere.

Within personal care, antiperspirant deodorants recovered strongly (+5%) and shaving products posted notable growth (+20%), though hair care products excluding dry shampoos declined 6%. The sun care, water spray, dry shampoo and other body care sub-segment saw a slight fall of 2%.

Home care's headline growth masked divergent performance across its sub-segments. Biocidal products dropped 40% and air fresheners fell 9%, but other household products rose 165%, representing more than 24 million units.

The steepest losses came in the 'other' segment. Technical, industrial, paint, varnish and automotive products fell 46%, a reduction of 44 million units year on year. The pharmaceutical and veterinary sub-segment declined 7%, returning to its 2023 level, while the food and other sub-segment grew 3%.

Despite the overall decline, industry representatives described France's position as robust. Overall production remains high, they said, reflecting consumer preference for aerosol packaging as a safe, affordable, easy-to-use and recyclable format.

The French aerosol industry is expected to maintain a strong position within Europe, though this will not be confirmed until the FEA publishes its pan-European figures in September 2026.
