Over the last 25 years, Despray Environmental has 100% recycled and removed over 560 million aerosol cans from the waste stream.
These ongoing efforts are currently responsible for 260 cans per second and rising with every Despray system that is commissioned, said the organisation.
The combined efforts of Despray co-founders Mike MacKay and Eelco Osse has led to this 'monumental achievement', with the company stating that the crucial need for innovative environmental solutions for 'end of life' spray cans is now a reality.
Despray said it has set a global benchmark in waste management of aerosol cans.
Its collaborative efforts have not only significantly minimised environmental hazards, but have also positioned Despray as a global frontrunner in sustainable practices, according to the business.
“Our achievements reflect our dedication to creating a sustainable future by recycling 100% of aerosol cans and their contents," said Eelco Osse. "Not only does our technology capture the metal but it also captures the liquid contents and propellant gasses for further waste to energy solutions.”

Currently, the recycling rate of aerosol cans is extremely low. The combination of mixed hazardous waste and potentially explosive propellants has made this waste stream almost impossible to recycle safely in the past. As a result, the environment has taken the impact of this previously unrecyclable product.
“Aerosols along with their contents and propellants can and should be recycled safely and efficiently. We just need the will and motivation to change the public mindset and industry practices,” said Mackay.
