Coroner urges aerosol safety measures following child death

A recent coroner’s report has raised urgent questions about aerosol safety and the role of social media in promoting dangerous behaviour among children. Oliver, a 12-year-old boy, tragically died after imitating a viral aerosol-related challenge. The BBC first reported on the incident.

Greater Manchester South Assistant Coroner Andrew Bridgman highlighted the “toxic” impact of social media algorithms, particularly on platforms like TikTok, in spreading risky trends.

He warned that more young people could be harmed unless both platforms and product manufacturers take action.

The coroner called for clearer labeling on aerosol products, including explicit warnings about the risks of misuse, and suggested considering age restrictions on sales.

“The posting of challenges on social media platforms will continue to take the lives of young, impressionable children unless platform providers take responsibility for their content and/or toxic algorithms,” Bridgman said.
