Commission adopts EU restriction on TDFAs in sprays

The European Commission has adopted an amendment to REACH Annex XVII which imposes a restriction on (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluorooctyl) silanetriol and any of its mono-, di- or tri-O-(alkyl) derivatives (TDFAs) in spray products.

The substance must not be used in the products, such as aerosol dispensers and pump sprays, supplied to the general public after 2 January 2021, in a concentration equal to or greater than two parts per billion by weight of the mixtures containing organic solvents.

Additionally the products must be marked "for professional users only" and "fatal if inhaled" with the pictogram GHS06.

TDFA is used alongside organic solvents for ceramics, such as kitchen tiles, sanitary ware, wash basins, bath tubs; automotive glass, float glass coating, glass doors of shower cabins; and enamel.

This Regulation enters into force 20 days after its publication in the EU’s Official Journal on 11 June.
