Ball Corporation has received two awards at Paris Packaging Week, with judges recognising separate projects involving carbon-free aluminium smelting technology and a recyclable refill cartridge system for personal care products.
The first award came from AEROBAL, the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers, whose annual World Aluminium Aerosol Can Awards recognised a three-way collaboration between Ball, Alcoa Corporation and Unilever.
The project piloted the use of ELYSIS carbon-free smelting technology in personal and home care packaging — the first time the process has been applied in this sector.
ELYSIS eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions from the aluminium smelting process, producing oxygen rather than CO₂ as a by-product.
The resulting aerosol can combines 50% ELYSIS primary aluminium with 50% post-consumer recycled content, delivering a reduced carbon footprint compared to conventionally produced equivalents.
Victoria Marletta, VP Commercial Personal & Home Care at Ball Corporation, said the project demonstrated that decarbonisation and commercial viability could be achieved together.
"This project combined a high level of recycled content and low-carbon primary aluminum — both key for decarbonising aluminum packaging," she said. "It also reflects our belief that aluminum has the potential to help deliver a world free from waste."
The second recognition came via the ADF Innovation Awards 2026, where Natulim — the first company on the Iberian Peninsula to adopt Ball's MEADOW KAPSUL refill system — received a certificate for excellence in packaging innovation in the personal care category.
The MEADOW KAPSUL system converts aluminium blanks supplied by Ball into pre-filled cartridges for use in durable, reusable dispensers.
The system is designed to reduce material and energy consumption relative to single-use alternatives when the dispenser is reused sufficiently, and can also simplify supply chain logistics.
Victor Ljungberg, co-founder and CEO of Meadow, said the company had sought to extend an existing concept beyond its original application.
"We realised that a widely available, sustainable and compliant packaging solution already existed," he said.
"Our goal then became to broaden its use beyond the beverage sector while ensuring consumers still benefit from an intuitive and convenient user experience."
