Alcoa Corporation, Ball Corporation and Unilever have announced the first-ever use of ELYSIS® carbon-free smelting technology in consumer aerosol packaging.
Launched ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), the partnership introduces an innovative aerosol can made with 50% ELYSIS aluminium and 50% post-consumer recycled content - one of the lowest-carbon packaging solutions of its kind.
The ELYSIS process, which replaces carbon emissions from traditional smelting with oxygen, eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions.
The result is a breakthrough in sustainable materials that could transform packaging across personal and home care sectors.
“This collaboration helps bring low-carbon aluminium into everyday products and demonstrates how innovation at the material level can deliver tangible sustainability benefits,” said Renato Bacchi, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Alcoa.
Ramon Arratia, Chief Sustainability Officer and Vice President, Global Public Affairs at Ball Corporation, added: “This project combines higher recycled content and low-carbon primary aluminium - both essential to decarbonising aluminium packaging and the sector as a whole.”
For Unilever, the partnership aligns with its commitment to reduce emissions across its value chain and respond to growing consumer demand for sustainable products.
